Way to go Whittier!
In order to make Mr. Vincent do something crazy, the middle school had to read at least 1500 books during the 2014-2015 school year. They ended up reading a total of 2,992 books!! Way to go Whittier!
Not only was Mr. Vincent subjected to a cold dunk tank, but students could pay $1 to dunk their teachers!! We raised $85 that morning that we donated to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital in honor of Mrs. Madsen's daughter, SuperHero Addy!!
Mr. Vincent and all of the Whittier teachers are amazing!!
Visit with Megan Frazer Blakemore, author of The Water Castle!
On May 18th, the library and the middle school GATE students hosted Megan Frazer Blakemore, author of The Water Castle, one of this year's Maine Student Book Award-nominated books! The Water Castle is a wonderful story about a young boy, Ephraim, who moves to his ancestral home in Crystal Springs, Maine to hopefully help his father heal from the effects of a stroke. Ephraim learns that there is supposedly a "fountain of youth" on his property with healing, restorative water. He sets out, with two friends, to find this fountain of youth, hoping that it will heal his dad.
The author was living right here in Poland when she wrote this book and was inspired by the story of Poland Spring water! She shared her presentation with all of the district's 5th and 6th graders as well as the middle school gifted and talented students. She also brought some copies of her books, including her new book just released on May 5th, for raffle prizes! Then Ms. Blakemore had lunch with the middle school gifted and talented writing group and talked about her writing process. The students had great questions for her, and it was a wonderful visit!
