What is a Tarin?

A Tarin is a medieval coin from the latin word, tarinus which is speculated to come from the Latin word Tarentum (Taranto), a Greek medieval colony where the coins were first minted.

In the Middle School a tarin is earned by reading a chapter book. The student then fills out a tarin, has it signed by a parent or teacher, and turns it in to the school library. The students work towards meeting a school wide goal for the number of books read during the year. If the students meet that goal, Mr. Vincent needs to watch out!

In 2009 the students "Suspended the Assistant Principal", Mr. Vincent.
Hang in there!
Mr. Vincent is a great sport and every year the middle school decides "What to do to Mr. Vincent". In 2008-2009 each book the students read was worth two feet of duct tape and they taped him to a wall. In 2007-2008 Mr. Vincent grew his hair all year and the top reader decided that he would have a purple Mr. T cut. He even went on a field trip like that! Unfortunately in 2009-2010 we did not make our goal of 1500 books, but we still celebrated all the books we read with popsicles at the end of the year.
Last year, both Mr Vincent AND Mrs. Farag-Davis (the middle school's former principal) were a daring duo!
What will YOU think of THIS year?

Maine Student Book Award & Tarin Challenge!
Recipe to Read!
For each book the middle school students read, they can fill out a "cookie" and get it signed by a parent or teacher. We will add the cookie to their grade's "cookie jar" displayed in the library. When we have 1500 cookies in the cookie jars,
Mr. Vincent (and Mrs. Marston!) better watch out!
Stay tuned!
In addition, the 7th graders are competing AGAINST the 8th graders to see which grade can read the most MAINE STUDENT BOOK AWARD nominated books! Each time students read a book that is on this year's Maine Student Book Award list, they will fill out a chocolate chip cookie to be added to their grade's cookie jar. The winning grade will receive a prize! At this point, the 7th graders are well in the lead!!
